For our last day of the Crossroads Tour, we have a spotlight on Jackie Morse Kressler. Jackie is the author of the HUNGER (Horsemen of the Apocalypse) series, the first of which was published this year. It's sequel, RAGE will be published in 2011.
Here is a synopsis of HUNGER:
“Thou art the Black Rider. Go thee out unto the world.”
“Thou art the Black Rider. Go thee out unto the world.”
Lisabeth Lewis has a black steed, a set of scales, and a new job: she’s been appointed Famine. How will an anorexic seventeen-year-old girl from the suburbs fare as one of the Four Horsemen of the Apocalypse?
Traveling the world on her steed gives Lisa freedom from her troubles at home: her constant battle with hunger, and her struggle to hide it from the people who care about her. But being Famine forces her to go places where hunger is a painful part of everyday life, and to face the horrifying effects of her phenomenal power. Can Lisa find a way to harness that power — and the courage to battle her own inner demons?
Our interview with Jackie is below.
LBO: What inspires you to write?
JMK: I can’t not write. I have worlds within me. (Or maybe just a lot of voices in my head.)
LBO: When did you first realize you wanted to be a writer?
JMK: I’d toyed with writing in high school and college, and then I noodled around with a novel for many years. I finally became serious about writing in 2003. (The first book I sold was not the first book I wrote.)
LBO: If you could do any other job in the world, what would it be and why?
JMK: I’d love to teach creating writing workshops at colleges—both the craft of writing and the business of writing. Authors need to learn about how to get published; it’s not intuitive. I’d love to be able to help people out. (While still writing my own books!)
LBO: If you could go back and give your unpublished self advice, knowing what you know now, what would it be?
JMK: Don’t be daunted! Rejections happen; that doesn’t mean you suck.
LBO: If you could leave your readers with one bit of wisdom, what would it be?
JMK: “Be excellent to each other; party on, dudes!” (Wisdom a la Wyld Stallyns.)
