Synopsis of Everneath -
Last spring, Nikki
Beckett vanished, sucked into an underworld known as the Everneath,
where immortals Feed on the emotions of despairing humans. Now she's
returned- to her old life, her family, her friends- before being
banished back to the underworld... this time forever.
She has six months before the Everneath comes to claim her, six
months for good-byes she can't find the words for, six months to find
redemption, if it exists.
Nikki longs to spend these months reconnecting with her boyfriend,
Jack, the one person she loves more than anything. But there's a
problem: Cole, the smoldering immortal who first enticed her to the
Everneath, has followed Nikki to the mortal world. And he'll do whatever
it takes to bring her back- this time as his queen.
As Nikki's time grows short and her relationships begin slipping
from her grasp, she's forced to make the hardest decision of her life:
find a way to cheat fate and remain on the Surface with Jack or return
to the Everneath and become Cole's...
My Review - This book was amazing. Everneath is about a girl trying desperately to make up for a horrible mistake she made. You see, Nikki has spent the last six months in human time in the Everneath. The Everneath is a place where Everlivings feed off of the emotions of humans to survive. At first, all you know is that Nikki made the choice to go with Cole willingly, but the reader doesn't know why. Brodi Ashton slowly reveals why Nikki made this horrifying decision with flashbacks throughout the story.
While in Everneath, the "feed" leaves you without any emotion at all. It leaves you a shell of the person you were before, and the whole time Nikki was there, only one thing kept her going. A face. A face that no matter what, she couldn't forget. That face belongs to Jack. The love of her life. After dealing with insecurities in her relationship, the pain that a horrible hit and run accident causes, and then a betrayal, Cole offers to take all the pain away that Nikki feels. She will feel no pain at all, if she goes with him to the Everneath, and in a rash moment, Nikki decides to do just that.
The whole time Nikki is gone, Jack thought that she ran away from home and is devastated and so hurt by her choice. I love the relationship between the two. Both before and after Nikki left. Brodi Ashton leaves no doubt in your mind that these two are meant for one another. Their love is moving and beautiful, and I fell for Jack hard. I found myself holding my breath and rooting for them in every scene and begging for Cole to just leave them alone. The problem is, that the Everneath is coming back for Nikki, and like it or not, she will be sucked back below, in six months.
Everneath is a beautiful modern love story that's interwoven with threads of mythology with a unique twist. Brodi Ashton literally left me speechless after I turned the last page. This story is haunting, yet brilliant, and although my heart ached for these characters throughout the book, I was at the same time left with a feeling of hope, and knowing that love will somehow conquer all in the end. At least I hope so :) I can't wait for the next installment!
*Thank you to Harper Teen for the ARC of Everneath!
