Author - Brodi Ashton
Publisher - Harper Teen
Release date - January 24, 2012

In honor of Valentine's Day, I think a contest is in order :)  One of my favorite new releases is Everneath by Brodi Ashton.  I love, love, love this book so much.  Plus the cover is so pretty and red!  This book made my heart ache because it is so full of love, but also heartbreak.  So, my contest is for one lucky winner to win a copy of this amazing book, because you have to read it!  In order to enter, in the comments below, be sure to leave your name and email address, but I want to hear about the worst Valentine's Day you ever had and why.  If you are lucky, and your Valentine's Day's have always been wonderful, then I want to hear about the silliest Valentine's Day gift you've ever gotten!  Haha!

The contest will run until the end of February and then one winner will be chosen.  U.S. entries only please, and you must be a follower of my blog!

Synopsis of Everneath - Last spring, Nikki Beckett vanished, sucked into an underworld known as the Everneath, where immortals Feed on the emotions of despairing humans. Now she's returned- to her old life, her family, her friends- before being banished back to the underworld... this time forever.

She has six months before the Everneath comes to claim her, six months for good-byes she can't find the words for, six months to find redemption, if it exists.

Nikki longs to spend these months reconnecting with her boyfriend, Jack, the one person she loves more than anything. But there's a problem: Cole, the smoldering immortal who first enticed her to the Everneath, has followed Nikki to the mortal world. And he'll do whatever it takes to bring her back- this time as his queen.

As Nikki's time grows short and her relationships begin slipping from her grasp, she's forced to make the hardest decision of her life: find a way to cheat fate and remain on the Surface with Jack or return to the Everneath and become Cole's...

My Review - This book was amazing.  Everneath is about a girl trying desperately to make up for a horrible mistake she made.  You see, Nikki has spent the last six months in human time in the Everneath.  The Everneath is a place where Everlivings feed off of the emotions of humans to survive.  At first, all you know is that Nikki made the choice to go with Cole willingly, but the reader doesn't know why.  Brodi Ashton slowly reveals why Nikki made this horrifying decision with flashbacks throughout the story.

While in Everneath, the "feed" leaves you without any emotion at all.  It leaves you a shell of the person you were before, and the whole time Nikki was there, only one thing kept her going.  A face.  A face that no matter what, she couldn't forget.  That face belongs to Jack.  The love of her life.  After dealing with insecurities in her relationship, the pain that a horrible hit and run accident causes, and then a betrayal, Cole offers to take all the pain away that Nikki feels.  She will feel no pain at all, if she goes with him to the Everneath, and in a rash moment, Nikki decides to do just that.

The whole time Nikki is gone, Jack thought that she ran away from home and is devastated and so hurt by her choice.   I love the relationship between the two.  Both before and after Nikki left.  Brodi Ashton leaves no doubt in your mind that these two are meant for one another.  Their love is moving and beautiful, and I fell for Jack hard.  I found myself holding my breath and rooting for them in every scene and begging for Cole to just leave them alone.  The problem is, that the Everneath is coming back for Nikki, and like it or not, she will be sucked back below, in six months.

Everneath is a beautiful modern love story that's interwoven with threads of mythology with a unique twist.  Brodi Ashton literally left me speechless after I turned the last page.  This story is haunting, yet brilliant, and although my heart ached for these characters throughout the book, I was at the same time left with a feeling of hope, and knowing that love will somehow conquer all in the end.  At least I hope so :)  I can't wait for the next installment!

*Thank you to Harper Teen for the ARC of Everneath!

Don't Breathe A Word by Holly Cupala Review

Book Title - Don't Breathe A World
Author - Holly Cupala
Published by - Harper Teen
Release date - January 3, 2012

Synopsis from Goodreads - From asthma, which has nearly claimed her life. From her parents, who will do anything to keep that from happening. From delectably dangerous Asher, who is smothering her from the inside out.

Joy can take his words - tender words, cruel words - until the night they go too far.

Now, Joy will leave everything behind to find the one who has offered his help, a homeless boy called Creed. She will become someone else. She will learn to survive. She will breathe... if only she can get to Creed before it’s too late.

Set against the gritty backdrop of Seattle’s streets and a cast of characters with secrets of their own, Holly Cupala’s powerful new novel explores the subtleties of abuse, the meaning of love, and how far a girl will go to discover her own strength.

My Review - I started a book club. I know, kind of crazy I don't already belong to one right? With as much as I read... anyway, for our very first book I chose Don't Breathe a Word by Holly Cupala. I had heard all the buzz surrounding the book and I really liked Holly's book Tell Me a Secret, so I wanted to check this book out. Don't Breathe a Word begins with Joy cutting off all her hair and disguising herself because she is getting ready to run away. Joy is suffocating, literally. She has asthma, that can get out of control and her parents are so fearful of losing her because of her illness that they suffocate her and let fear lead them instead of helping Joy live a normal life, aside from her condition. Joy doesn't just pack up and take off, she stages her own kidnapping because aside from getting out from under her parents stifling ways, she is in the middle of an abusive relationship with a man that leaves scars seen and unseen, and threatens everything Joy cares about.

Once Joy escapes her home, she eventually ends up on the streets with other homeless people of all ages, and with all different stories. Holly doesn't hold back here and gives a gritty look at life on the street. It isn't long before Joy gives herself the new name of Triste and starts hanging out with characters May, Santos and Creed. Each of them all have their own painful pasts and secrets that are slowly revealed throughout the story. As each person opens up and reveals themselves, it makes Joy doubt herself even more and she starts to be afraid of what her new friends would think if they knew her secrets, and the real reason she ran away from home. The supporting characters all played important roles in Joy's story and their presence added depth and gave Joy friendship at a time she needed it most. Santos is sweet and funny, but disappears each night but will never discuss where he goes. May is a tortured soul who has a Mother also on the street addicted to drugs and although May hates her at the same time feels the need to stay close to her just in case. Creed is the knight in shining armor who feels it is his job to try to look out and protect them all while at the same time dealing with secrets of his own.  Joy slowly starts having feelings for Creed, this boy that speaks to her heart through his music and quiet strength.

Aside from the relationship dynamics in this book, the bigger story here is the fact that Joy blames herself for the abuse she received at the hands of Asher, and the fact she wasn't brave enough to tell her family the truth.  What she doesn't realize yet is that she is anything but weak. Don't Breathe a Word is a story about hope. A story about a girl that claws her way out of darkness and comes out on the other end realizing she is in control of her own mind, body, an soul, and that there is light even in the darkest of times.
